What to expect
- Low fees. Vaccines, consultations and some surgeries cost far less than a private clinic, and some services are free.
- Queues. Government hospitals often see many animals a day, so plan for a wait.
- Fixed hours. Most are not open at night, and few offer emergency care around the clock.
- A narrower service list. Scans, specialist care and a hospital stay are less common than at a private hospital.
Call before you go
A short call saves a wasted trip. These are the questions worth asking:
- Are you open today, and until what time?
- Do you treat dogs and cats, and is the doctor in?
- Do you have the vaccine or service I need, and what does it cost?
- Do I need an appointment, and what should I bring (a vaccination card, an ID, a leash or carrier)?
When a private clinic makes more sense
If it is night, the animal is in serious trouble, or your pet needs a scan or an overnight stay, a 24-hour private hospital is usually the better bet. We list those separately.
