Pet insurance in India: what it covers and whether it's worth it

By the vetkar team · Updated · 4 min read

The short answer

  • Pet insurance in India is regulated by IRDAI and works by reimbursement: you pay the vet, then claim the eligible amount back.
  • Guides quote roughly ₹5,000 to ₹12,000 a year for a dog or cat, but the cover limits behind those premiums vary from about ₹50,000 to several lakh, so compare the limit, not just the price.
  • It helps most against a large, unplanned bill. It rarely covers routine care, and it will not cover a condition your pet already has.

How pet insurance works in India

Pet insurance is a general-insurance product. Most plans reimburse. You pay the clinic, send the invoice, medical records and a claim form to the insurer, and the eligible amount is paid back, usually within a few weeks. Cashless treatment at network clinics exists on some plans but is less common than for human health cover, so check whether a clinic near you is on the network.

What is usually covered

  • Accidents, such as a road accident, a fall or a fracture.
  • Illness that needs treatment, tests or a hospital stay.
  • Surgery, including emergency surgery.
  • On some plans: third-party liability if your dog injures someone, and death or theft benefits.

What is usually not covered

  • Conditions your pet had before the policy started, and often hereditary or breed-related ones.
  • Routine care: vaccination, deworming, neutering and check-ups, unless a plan adds a wellness cover.
  • Anything during the waiting period, which is commonly 15 to 30 days for illness. Accident cover often starts sooner.
  • Cosmetic procedures, breeding and pregnancy costs.

What it costs

We could not find one reliable price list, and the guides we read disagree. Several publishers sell insurance, so treat their figures as examples, not quotes. What they agree on is that the premium depends on your pet's species, breed and age, that pedigree breeds cost more than Indian breeds, and that the cover limit differs a lot between plans.

Is it worth it?

Insurance is a bet against a large, unlikely bill. Use the ranges on our cost page to size that bill: an emergency stay, IV fluids, tests and a surgery can run into tens of thousands of rupees, while routine care is a few thousand a year and is usually not covered. That points to a rough test.

  • It is more likely to be worth it if you could not easily pay a bill of ₹40,000 or more, your pet is young and healthy (so nothing is excluded yet), or the breed has known health problems.
  • It is less likely to be worth it if you have savings set aside for emergencies, your pet is older with existing conditions, or the plan excludes most of what you worry about.
  • Either way, read what is excluded before you look at the premium.

Questions to ask before you buy

  1. What is the sum insured, and is it per year, per illness or per claim?
  2. Which conditions are excluded, including pre-existing and hereditary ones?
  3. How long is the waiting period for illness, and for accidents?
  4. Is there a co-payment, a deductible or a room-rent-style sub-limit?
  5. Does the plan pay cashless at any clinic I use, or is it reimbursement only?
  6. How is the premium expected to change at renewal, and is there an age limit for renewing?
  7. How long do claims take, and what documents are needed?

Frequently asked questions

Is pet insurance available in India?

Yes. Several insurers offer plans for dogs, and some for cats. Availability, breed and age limits change, so check the current terms with the insurer.

How much does pet insurance cost in India?

Published guides quote about ₹5,000 to ₹12,000 a year for a healthy dog or cat, more for pedigree breeds and older pets. Cover limits vary widely, so compare the limit as well as the premium.

Does pet insurance cover vaccination?

Usually not. Most plans cover accidents, illness and surgery, and leave out routine care such as vaccination, deworming and neutering unless you add a wellness plan.

Does pet insurance cover pre-existing conditions?

Generally no. Anything your pet had before the policy began, and often hereditary conditions, is excluded, which is why people buy while their pet is young and healthy.
